GIFT (Geriatric interventions for Troubled Minds) Care for Elderly is an online curriculum, made available through the WWAMI region Practice and Research Network (WPRN), to improve the care of elders with dementia and cognitive behaviors.

Millions of elderly demented patients have difficult behaviors such as agitation, irritation, and aggressive behavior in various settings, including hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, adult family homes, and outpatient clinics. Many of these behaviors are misdiagnosed and mistreated. It is important that family members, care providers, nurses, and physicians are able to identify and treat these behaviors using appropriate behavioral modifications such as frequent orientation, avoiding noise, minimizing interruption of routines, playing music, and making the individual’s living situation home-like.

St. Peter Family Medicine Residency, a long standing WPRN site, has developed this curriculum. Dr. Yue Teng has authored [edited] these materials for use in graduate medical education. Disseminating this curriculum is a collaboration between a WPRN site, St. Peter Family Medicine Residency, and the UW Clinical Informatics Research Group.
